Pffft... You don't NEED a hard floor dinghy anymore than you NEED a chartplotter, or refrigeration, or SSB, or etc... You NEED a way to get from the boat to shore.
We had a West Marine RU-260 rollup on our Valiant 32 that we used from Seattle to the Sea of Cortez over the course of 5 years. The dinghy was perfect for our needs. It was easy to inflate, easy to store on deck, or down below for passages, easy to lift out of the water. I could literally lift it up by the bow line and pull it up over the lifelines to deflate, but using a halyard and a bridle was easy too. We ran it with a 3.5hp outboard, or paddled when we felt like it.
Now that we have a new boat, with more space, particularly on the foredeck, and can afford more "amenities", I'm going to buy a... WM RU-260 rollup again or the Zodiac version of the same boat from Defender. The only difference is that this time I'm going to splurge and get a Torqueedo electric outboard, because I don't want to have to carry the gasoline, nor the smell, nor the noise, nor the exhaust of an outboard.
Unless said object existed 50 or 100 years ago for cruising it is not "needed". It is a luxury option.
