John is postulating that the boat was being hand steered or under AP compass only and may have been saved if its AP was tracking to the GPS and you state that it is dangerous to do so, and imply that the boat met danger because it was using an integrated AP/GPS.
We have fully integrated electronics and use/not use them according to the situation (BTW, they are all different makes). I never understand when people summarily and strongly state that they would never integrate their electronics because of perceived dangers. The danger is in the human, not the electronics. I have yet to meet a boat that blew up or headed straight into a reef just because their electronics were integrated.
BTW, if you buy electronics now, they can only be integrated, since they derive their power from the same network that automatically provides the integration. Even if they are all different brands - the power and communications are all standard and automatic now.
Let the fear, dread and loathing begin...
And I bet more boats not using AP/GPS have met grief running aground from unknowingly being off their planned track line than from boats having the AP/GPS steering them into a reef.
