Hi,
Always amuses me that in a culture as God-fearing as America, where so much of the existence of the majority is based solely on Faith, so many still have a problem accepting the evidence that appears to be pretty overwhelming in regards to climate change... An astonishing percentage of Americans believe in the existence of some sort of God, a convicted pedophile will likely be elected President before a candidate who openly professes to be an atheist or agnostic would ever be... Just a hunch, but I would guess that a higher percentage of those who deny the likelihood of global warming believe in the existence of God, than do those who believe climate change is really occurring… Of course, the partisan political divide between the sides of the argument is even more striking...
So, like the famous wager regarding the existence of God, if you believe in such, you have nothing to lose come Judgment Day if he doesn't show up - but a non-believer might pay a heavy price, if he does indeed turn out to exist, and be passing judgment... So, seems to me the Christian thing for all those God-fearing 'Murricans to do is to err on the side of attempting to minimize global climate change, and if it turns out not to exist, no harm done, not like we're gonna spark another Ice Age by driving Priuses, after all...
Only difference as I see it, is that there's a hell of a lot more evidence to support the notion of global warming, than there is in favor of the existence of God.... (grin)
BTW, if you really are interested in a very readable and compelling analysis of the issue of climate change, and why it makes sense for America to take the lead in the efforts to combat it, may I suggest HOT, FLAT, AND CROWDED by Thomas Friedmann - it's an excellent place to start, IMHO...
best regards,
Jon
