So now it's blowing over 30-35 and the seas have climbed to 12+ feet, so how does one reef with the Leisure-Furl or other boom furlers? Does one happily turn the vessel into the wind under these conditions? According to the folks who sell these units, the answer is "yes" you'll have to. Plus, you better be sure that the boom is exactly perpendicular to the mast which I believe is preset on the topping lift. I think I'll stick to my conventional set up with using my Tides Marine Strong Track. I can reef in a blow on any point of sail as long as the main is not laying against the spreaders. I can see how a boom furler would be quite pleasant for coastal sailing, but I have real doubts if it is desirable off shore.
