It's a crew thing on our boat too(when I have one)

I find if conditions allow, lowering the head of the main to the spreaders first, it's easier to get the first half dozen flakes on the boom. They're never perfect but it gets the weight on top and balanced enough to stay there(the foot of my main is close to 19 feet).

The rest of the sail is much is much easier to stow. Another set of hands is the best thing.
