Let me start with the simple fact I love my davits and the fact that I can have my dink ready almost as fast as the anchor. The elimination of drag and improved maneuverability makes a big difference. I carry a 9 1/2 RIB with a 9.8hp Enough to plane with two adults, Siberian Husky and groceries when desired, but small enough to be controllable. When we downsize it will be back to towing, but then we won't be doing long days or extended trips.
I won't go into davits that are way out of proportion to the boat, but the way so many "yachties" simply hoist the dink half way up and don't even bother to secure it. Seeing a dinghy swinging happily from side to side as they motor from one place to another makes me wonder what else I need to look out for. If they have no concept of the loading they are putting on their equipment what else are they unaware of. It makes little difference if it is a classic wooden boat or modern clorox bottle, the stresses are the same.
