There's a lot of anti electronic posts on the sailing chat rooms(even they are navigating electronically), but in the news I'm reading, there's little surprise in this move.
I read in news articles there may be a demand for the big heavy paper charts more as a nostalgic item(I love them for that). There could be printers stepping up for that right now. Plus NOAA has a ton of older charts on digital files to print for this same decorative purpose(I have an early issue of the Gulf of Maine that makes me pause often)
But the paper chart has moved to back-up in the marine industry. I haven't seen many who are actually piloting on the paper charts today, triangles, rules, etc. And as evolving digital devices and "products" make up dating charts simple(it will be automatic soon), paper will be more work for a true back up.
According to news sources, NOAA will print the big $20.00 charts into April so I bet they'll sell out quickly. Then the PDFs are a temporary print out source-if the demand is small, that will dry up too I fear. But the demand will be supplied as it has been with chartbooks etc.(this could be good for them,...if the demand is there).
The chart of the near future(I suspect we've only begun building it), will be quite a data filed tool compared to the electronic charts that are moving shipping, commercial and recreational, around the globe today.
