NOAA announces end of traditional paper nautical charts
Paper is out, everywhere.
That drawer will hold a lot of tablets
Hmmm sailboats don't need electricity to move...
Where's Dr. Electron when we need him? :^))
As long as they still offer Print-on-Demand charts, what's the real difference...?
That's about how I see it AND .....
Hmmmm so are we likely to see a big blue box...
We have seen
They'll soon offer PDFs files, great for printing. It's all the other "new stuff" that's making paper obsolete.
You have a printer that big?
No I don't but I use the service. A 3' plotter isn't hard to find.
Are POD charts "waterproof?"
They can be....
There's also the booklet charts, which are really handy for stuff like the ICW
Aren't on-demand pretty expensive?
Jon, "Obtaining print-on-demand charts simply involves a bit more advance planning, is all..."
Electronic charts don't meet the rule?
Larry, in a word...No. The CFR's need serious updating...
What I dread is the cessation of RNC charts in favor of ENC....
32x24" screens would be small ones on many of the boats being outfitted today!
Chart updates
Last paper chart we bought was in 2007
Wow... thanks, now I don't feel like all that money I spent on Canadian paper charts...
Jon, you could find most of Neils gear in many kitchens today.
Our computers range from an iPad original version to an 8 year old one.
GPS enabled tablets have become ridiculously cheap.
Things change
Count us in with electronics
Luddites! LOL
One mans luddite is another man's tech guru, today.
OK silly question about "the camera in your pocket..."
No reason to believe cameras are immune...
I don't believe them to be immune at all
Wait until you get a tablet, that's the boat tool!
We aren't as far out on the curve as you are Tom!
My "tech leap" was partly driven by my writing, Mark.
Tablets are really not for writing or generating documents.
Exactly, for reading not writing.
I forgot to add that with electronic charting
Not to mention Google Earth
Hey man, when the big EMP hits...
No laughing matter
You can't worry about everything
The EMP I worry about isn't from lightning
Like I said - we are Luddites!
There are strikes and there are stikes...
How hard do you have to get hit by lightning to prove you survived, without paper charts???
Any larger strike and our boat would have been lost
Well stated Mark
I sort of agree with the "train your brain" part.
That is what I meant
Let me offer a counterpoint to a few of those views..
Nice discussion.
Very good points! ALL of them from all parties
You can certainly get electronic versions of Explorer charts

Explorer electronic charts are only available if you buy a Garmin plotter.
I agree with much, but not the 8x10 mask part
Resolution is an issue when combined with screen area..
5 years is being gracious
And....
Not so Dave,
Generally they are grounded to be effective
Cage
I've heard that inside metal cases or ovens, that some lightning strikes have zapped back-up electronics.
The ones I know of
Isn't that already built in, Greg?
Sort of....
NO
I don't understand
Not that.
But Greg was talking about reducing induced noise, not protecting from lightning.
It's protection from lightning is nominal at best.
Maybe, but aluminum waterproof camera cases, certainly without vision glass?
Actually you are thinking of a screen room... a bit different.
Those NOAA charts were works of art
A small proporiotn of the modern charts are indeed works of art, but
Not to mention where you will fall off the earth and where all the sea monsters are!
This news shows that almost everyone is navigating electronically today.
