The coax is to keep the "pipe" from the antenna "clean". If it conducts the over voltage which is many, many thousands or millions of times more powerful directly into circuits that are designed for those minuscule voltages and amperages, then disaster to the piece of sensitive equipment will result.
Think of bomb going off next to you eardrum.
