I was coming into Ko'Olina harbor in my old Frances 26 and had started up my engine and was getting ready to drop the sails when the engine died. I took the tiller from my buddy, we made a few tacks, and dropped sails perfectly as we coasted up to the fuel dock. It helped that my friend was extremely skilled with sail handling. Three kids who lived in the marina watched us come in. When my buddy hopped off and tied us off the kids said, "wow, that was the coolest thing we've ever seen here".
It's best to have the skills for when shit goes wrong. I regularly practice those skills with my wife and kids when there's plenty of room for error. Now that we have a boat without a motor that training has really paid off.
