I always find it somewhat dismaying that the boat I race on strips off the sails before we are even close to the dock. Sure the motor is running very well at the moment... but we do carry minimal fuel, and in the past, we have had "issues" with the engine (actually fuel system) that have taken the engine off line.
I sure would prefer to at least leave the jib on, with the sheets still handy.
Yup, I prefer a braces and belt approach. When I go though some "dicey moves" with my own boat, it is always with a back up in mind... such as sailing to a mooring, with the engine idling.
Of course some will say... well that is just lack of confidence. Personally, I think it is just a strong confidence in... Murphy.
