No one "needs" a Dutchman. But like many things on your boat, it's very cool to have. It's one thing that, properly installed and tuned, works as advertised. With your track system, you release the main and the sail comes down like a ton of bricks, perfectly flaked on your boom. There's nothing to snag when raising the main. When reefing, you don't tie in any intermediate reef points because the Dutchman monofilament lines hold the sail in place.
When I had sailboats, I didn't have a Dutchman either and didn't think I needed one. After sailing boats with a Dutchman, I can't imagine not having one. It's like preferring hank on jibs to roller furling. It makes your life a whole lot easier.
Martin Van Breems, the guy who invented the Dutchman sail flaking system, boom brake, and track system is not only a sailor who is also an inventor, he's an accomplished sailor with many thousands of sea miles.
