5 of us, who all knew how to sail went out for the day in the San Francisco Bay area. Had a LOT of fun. About mid day we went over to Angel Island that had a small “day only” dock that extended part way across the SMALL harbor. We saw that the first slip on the inside (closer to the land, with about 2 boat lengths between the land and the dock) was open. Another smaller boat had tried to make it, but decided not to and departed.
We had a quick meeting and decided on a plan. With all crew posted at strategic points on the boat, we sailed behind the dock, closer to shore, rounded up with the bow almost touching land, then two of us on the bow (me being one of them) back winded the jib and backed the boat into the slip! As we coasted to a stop, the dock line was just dropped on the cleat like a scene from “Captain Ron” and one crew member popped a bottle of champagne as the appointed cook was doing a sweet smelling stir fry. Every other boat was having cold sandwiches.....
Was it reckless? May be, but TO THIS DAY it's one of the sweetest memories I have in sailing!
