As you and others have remarked, perhaps the greatest risk in such a situation is the unexpected "surprise", akin to a kid chasing a ball into the street right in front of you. I hate sailing - especially in close quarters - with anything but a high-clewed jib, the considerable blind spot a low-cut jib creates could cost even the most talented skipper dearly in that sort of situation...
