() If you're tallking about the oar I lost on my vane it was definitely user error. Vane didn't break, was installed incorrectly. My error. And vanes do break. Lightening does strike, IC's quit working, etc.
At least on our boat we have a backup for the vane. On your Cat I don't know how many electronic steering systems you have. for a backup. I wouldn't personally feel comfortable with at least one back up.
