solid state gyros have been developed for other uses, and the cost has dropped to near nothing due to the high volume in those uses (cell phones, car navigation systems, and the like). Modern pilots are the beneficiaries. A windvane cannot hope to compete with one in accuracy of course even on a slow boat - but again the can be repaired with 3rd world tools.
