BTW - relating this to the AP/Vane thread 
In Response To: Here's a picture ()
() from the looks of that track (again; thin red line highlighted by blue) I was probably tracking the apparent wind with the AP. I usually use the track-wind mode under sail, unless we're sailing among close hazards or making the last leg to a harbor entrance.
We don't have a vane and I'm not capable of steering that well.

- A recent change: autopilots have gotten a LOT better at steering in the last 10 years...
