Not sure what your getting at.

Remove the sail on the vane? The Vane steers much better then the tillerpilot hooked up to it. The Vane sail adjusts for apparent wind changes as well as the normal oscillations in the wind.

Plus I don' have any electric stuff hanging off my stern and no cords to be concerned with; no fuses to blow, no magnetic effects to concern myself with, and no concerns over circuit boards. Lightening storms have no effect on a vane. At least I've never yet heard of a vane alone being struck and thus unusable. I set the windvane and we make minor adjustments as needed. Minor to the sails and sometimes to the course settings. Personally, I'm not a big fan of being 100% dependent on all the electronic gizzmos we sailors use today. I suspect without many of the "must haves" that sailors now say they need the sailing community would be much smaller. People wouldn't be able to spend a bucket of money on a boat and take off. They would actually learn something of seamanship and self sufficiency. With all the dependency on electronic gizzmos in many way shapes and forms we're ultimately tied to the dock. Just simply to keep things working and fixed.
