Alpha Gear

I looked seriously at Alpha a year of so ago and was within inches of purchasing one of their units. However, from information I gathered I came away with the idea that their product hasn't been updated in years. I was in email contact with them and when I asked if their control panel was waterproof I never heard back from them. A company that can't even answer IMHO valid questions via email doesn't deserve my business. Even if they are a good or great product, out here I find support as important as a good product.

An example of good support would be when a friends boat was struck by lightening and Exeltech was contacted. They said they don't have breakdowns and sent him a replacement part with instrucitons on putting it in the unit. That is the kind of support a cruising sailor needs.... IMHO.

But back to auto pilots. When the best are all custom and the manufactures want your arm and leg then I understand why many cruisers stay with Vanes. Vane's are expensive but in the long run I do believe they are more economical. Unless you're cruising with a Silver Spoon in your mouth.

Ciao
