When we headed out I got used to setting up the rout for the next leg when at anchor. I would mostly do it the evening before we up anchor. From there I use it for all of the other tracking stuff and tides. Our small plotter does all of that.

If we are off shore, I set up our plotter and then I also use our Yeoman Chart plotter, It uses paper charts and a GPS driven puck to plot our position every 30 min or so.

So far, it has only happened one time that our normal plotter crapped out and it sure felt good to just pick right up on the Yeoman! We were only a day or so out, so it was not critical, but convinced me I was doing it correctly.....
