Those are the most recent electronic charts I've purchased, they say they're the best and they are definitely not, they will not let one import other charts (I know iNavX will not either), they have over 500 people they brag about working on their products, they didn't respond to my email when my screen went blank with any suggestions (I wasn't the only one with this problem and it was reported by another in the app store feedback), a single man in Panama made better charts of the area around Panama then all of Navionics, the manual IMHO was written by a 3rd grader at best and provides NO info as to how to solve problems with the app, it appears that the Navionics guy here just came and ghosted away instead of addressing some of the issues, there is no way to actually know what charts you have of what areas and what resolution are downloaded on the ipad and so when you're not connected what will happen.
Personally I've not been happy that the Navionics charts are not portable. When I pay for something I expect to use it however I need so this is the first and probably the last Navionics product I'll purchase. I said that too in the evaluations on my site : http://www.svelysium.net/_Cruising/_productevals/index.htm
I only singled Navionics out here because someone was touting iNavionics and I was pointing out my experience. Yours to some extend has been different. Glad of that. On my web site I also discuss the other products that I've used. Those evaluations are my opinion and experiences and as with anything others may find their mileage varies.
I'll continue to try the product since I've purchased it. Maybe time will enhance the charting but I'm not hopeful.
As for paper charts you are right. But then again no government to my knowledge is making a profit off of them and so I understand that they represent areas where those governments have need. The paper charts are no worse and no better then the electronic charts I purchased when I first bough NavX 4 years ago. Of course I understand that those are simply electronic versions of the paper charts. Should I be bold enough to enter the canals of Chile I know there is only one set that is marginally accurate and now out of print. But we're not planning on heading there. I also know there are islands and reefs in the Pacific that are miles off from where the charting shows them. IMHO any company who is selling their charts for that area ought to make those corrections.
BTW, are back in Panama now? You said "BTW, Navionics right now shows us sitting in our exact slip".
Ciao
