I do pretty much the same
In Response To: Survey - who does route planning on their GPS as opposed to just using it for tracking position ()
However, when I am in waters away from home I do my planning on paper charts then create a route on the GPS. This way I have a planned route available to me. This is especially useful in Maine waters where there are many, many islands and rocks, marked and unmarked, and it is very easy to become confused if one is not paying close attention.

- What's a GPS? All I need is a stick and a piece of string to do my navigating. '-)
