It's done what I needed those few times.
The trick for me, is keeping that 2nd anchor system easy enough to use. I've gone to laying the Danforth on in the forward/bottom of the starboard cockpit locker. Only a few loose items(unless I have bikes onboard...) are over it. Chain, I keep about 2-10' sections of 3/8" in a bucket. 150-200' of 5/8" nylon in a long coil rests in the cockpit lockers. I do keep a shackle, that's been greased, on both the Danforth and the thimbled loop on the nylon.
Not perfect for sure but it's doable when I need it. Last time was Irene. Easy 50 knots overhead in protected Pulpit Harbor.
When we sailed away from home for a year, I kept 4 anchors and 3 rodes I think. 2 were ready to go easily.
Coastal sailing close to home is easier in that you can find sheltered anchorages. I feel no need for more ground tackle with my current sailing.
