I think that if you hang the Danforth

on the stern rail and they have some pretty good SS mounts made for that, you could use a standard galvanized shackle. You would have to use a small wrench each time to snug it up but a lot of people do just that. You could finish it off by passing a correctly sized black nylon zip tie through the shackle and pulled up tight. That's a pretty simple way to get past that problem. I used that method for years until I decided to install an anchor hawser on the stern. I never really liked that either because it made retrieving the anchor harder. It deployed fine but getting it back aboard required you to pull the line back through which was time consuming. I've tried milk crates, buckets, a built in locker in the stern and bags to hold my stern anchors. I finely settled on a anchor bag made of mesh which had a thick rope around the top to hold the bag open when retrieving the line. It had a hole in the bottom for the bitter end to hang out so you could secure it to the boat. The whole thing worked well and did away with the hard bucket. Using the 8 strand blait nylon line, the entire package collapsed in on itself and snuggled right down in the corner out of the way but easy to get at. I still have the bag and use it to keep my hurricane dock lines in. Hanging the anchor on the stern and using a shackle is a completely acceptable way to go. IMHO.
