As an example, 9/16 or 5/8 three strand nylon or 8 strand 5/8 plait will work on the same gypsy. Go to the manufactures web site and look up the windless model you have and usually it will say what will work. I think you will find that either will would be fine. My windless manufacture recommends 8 plait over 3 strand and the chain to line splice passes right through without any trouble what so ever. I first tried 5/8 3 strand because that's what I had on board at the time but it would bind up occasionally when it came to the chain splice so I changed over to 8 plait. What a difference. The only down side to 8 plait is that it has more of a tendency to snag on things like coral. Where 3 strand will pull right over because of it tight woven construction, 8 plait might snag a bit. You end up, over time, with little snag tags along the line that you don't have with three strand. But having said that, I've had my 8 plait on my port anchor for 10 years and it still ok. It's getting to the end of it's life but I used the crap out of it. It really got an awful lot of use. Much of it over a dead broken up coral bottom which is pretty tough on nylon line in general.
