Brait can slide too deeply into the groove below the chain "teeth" on the gypsy.

() If you're going to use a combo rode, and your windlass has a capstan on top, I'd use the capstan, then switch over to the chain gyspy manually.
You can up the size of the rope, and try that too. I'd see if it works "on land" with loaded test line first. That might help.
