And propane is outrageous, higher than oil. We are oil hogs in Maine, the most(or close to) dependent states. Odd with all our wood. But it's not just heating. Also transportation costs. We have an electric dryer but rarely use it, for a drying rack. But if you could put the big power hogs on natural gas, you're so lucky.
It would take roughly a 20k investment to put solar panels on our house that would negate our use. That would take 20 years to pay off depending on incentives. I'm looking into it but it doesn't make sense, yet. It would be nice to say we were carbon=neutral. Better to keep lowering our use though(little else will help the planet), no matter what we do.The incentives, both state and Fed are still there. They should be higher!
But other than fossil supplied electric, we don't use any oil for heating so were in fact in the lower 20%(10% in fact last I checked) of heating costs here in Maine, heating for about 700 total in wood pellets and kwh for a heat pump.
Now if I could do a conservation program to lower my property taxes, we'd be in good shape.
