I think it comes down to how one lives on board...

No doubt taking the typical apartment approach to a floating environment is going to yield poor results.

But I do recall having a conversation with one of our posters here who was living on board in baja waters for a time.... I asked him what his limitations were... and how long he could stay "on the hook."

He had 4 80w solar panels, and stated that these supplied him with plenty of power by noon... keeping both the refrigerator and ham radio, power satisfied. I suggested that his limitation might be food... he stated that fresh fish was readily available. How about cooking fuel... nope, the microwave would run off of stored battery power. Fresh water was also available via water maker and that strong battery bank... again supplied by solar.

So just what was the limitation to living on the hook in a remote location... "Beer. Runs out in about 6 weeks or so."

The problem with apartment dwellers living aboard is in not adopting to a cruiser lifestyle.
