This last summer, we ran for a couple months without a shore power charger. We've never had a genset. That was one of our goals when improving power efficiency for extended cruising.

Cruising in September, the solar panels topped off the batteries daily by early afternoon at 50ºN. We even ran the electric coffee pot every morning off the inverter. Down in Mexico, we could run the water maker, sailing instruments, misc computers, etc., and still have a couple amps left over for charging. Not as much sun up north though. If we did much winter cruising, solar would not keep up with the load. Anyway, conservation + solar = QUIET! And we're happy not to be maintaining another infernal combustion engine!
