pretty much point to point. At least that's way I've always done it. Sometimes you pick up a counter current that gives you a half knot or so. Sometimes the "point effect" kicks your butt. I put a reef in the main, run out the stay sail and sheet it in, throttle up to cruising speed, set the auto pilot, duck and cover. It's all good if your GPS look ahead line isn't pointing backwards. Mine has on occasion and that's when I put the boat on an off shore tack hove to and make dinner. Six or seven hours later you're five or six miles further off shore, the winds usually down below 20 knots apparent and off I go. The idea of tacking 100 miles off the coast of Northern California or Oregon all the way to Washington does exactly zero for me. I guess I'm just getting old.
