Actually, they're exhausted. What you don't see is Olivia, the German Shorthair Pointer.

Bottom line is that she's insane. While the two pits like to run and all, Olivia runs full speed non-stop. She dives at them and runs away, repeatedly antagonizing them until they chase her. When the photo of the pits moping on the road was taken, Olivia was still galloping all over the woods.
German Shorthair Pointers aren't really very good boat dogs. Too much energy.
