My in-laws had 30 acres of land in the Adirondacks. They sold ten of it to a family friend. He put in a road and did some other stuff before becoming ill. The land was too beautiful and the price too good to pass up. We bought it figuring that we'd build on it one day. After discussing it, we decided the time was now. Building an off grid cabin in the woods is more appealing to us than cruising to Key West or the Bahamas.
I wrote a college paper 30 years ago about building a self-sufficient homestead. After all those years, I'll get a chance to actually attempt it, using a lot of marine technology.
