I'll admit, I do shave the corners closer with the new tech. Why wouldn't I? As long as I feel comfortable with my accuracy, why wouldn't I take advantage of new technology that better defines where I am on the chart? There's not set line there, each of us defines what is safe.
Risk taking hasn't gone up for me just because I have better position accuracy with gps. I don't doubt you deal with some owners that learned navigation on their car gps's but the people I know that value the newer tech have almost all learned charting on paper. That's why I don't see the "video game" captain myth, as driving increased groundings(again stats, show the opposite). The people I know are still navigating, paying attention to water depths, making visual bearings, visual observations while we use the newest technology, to make piloting an easier task. In my case, I'm a better navigator with the new tools(I speak only for myself).
Few(you excluded ) of us have claimed one or the other is any safer or more dangerous, but everybody seems to agree, you have to use the tools correctly. If not, you're going to have problems.
That north sea story, I just don't get why the accuracy of gps is at fault there? Autopilots will gladly run boats into land if you don't keep a watch. Nothing new there.
