Of course, no doubt many accidents of yesteryear could have been averted by the use of today's technology...

I've simply asserted that this is a classic example of the mindset of 'GO TO' navigation... The ship was not using an "approved" system, but rather one "similar to the one you might have in your car"... Again, do you really think such a track would have been likely to have been laid down using a paper chart? Certainly, there was a whole host of problems with the management of this voyage, but do you really believe that the mode of 'navigation' being employed in this instance - simply plugging in a destination waypoint into a GPS - had 'nothing to do with', or was not a MAJOR factor in causing this accident?
