Do you suggest that we outlaw all electronics to make boating much safer?

Future paper charts
Agreed, it's an excellent read, I've recommended it here, as well...
You mention the Archangel grounding which supports the opposite.
I don't think there is ever a case to blame on electronic charts or charting
No, my speculation about the loss of RULE 62 is purely that...
You seemed so convinced I thought you had some background to what was going on. .
As I said, it's nothing more than speculation, based upon what my own eyes and ears have told me over the years...
Ocean floors paved in wrecks show that we've been taking risks, pre-gps.
I'm a wonderer, as the song goes,
Those accidents are not caused by electronic navigation
"there are people out there that use a chart plotter with the same approach as a GPS in a car..."
Lost a coupla folks in past years folks following roads that GPS reports but impassable in winter, for example. Yet....
Kinda like 4WD..
Those folks failed to do one thing...

According to 2011 CG accident data, to make boating safer,...
No
The electronics did not cause the accident
You've got it. And what is the difference between plotting on paper with a gps and a chartplotter?
Do you guys really believe this course ever would have been plotted on paper...?
A captain like that will find a way to run aground with our without electronics
I wouldn't believe it ever would have been plotted electronically
(sigh)ok, let's go back 30 years in navigational tech, and save this boat with paper charts.
Of course, no doubt many accidents of yesteryear could have been averted by the use of today's technology...
They made a mistake with their tools, Jon.
Of course they made a mistake with their tools...
Sure. these stats were easy to find.
Thanks, Tom - but those numbers are so broad as to have little definitive bearing upon...
You're wrong on few stats there.
Electronic navigation has surely drawn in more people who cannot be bothered with learning navigation though.
Too much speculation and assumption in your post for me to take seriously.
Observation, not speculation or assumption.
"Throughout New England I met a lot of boaters that didn't know Port from Starboard"
"Are boaters better educated on the west coast?" No...
There was a Captain aboard a large ship..........
Good one, and if he was dyslexic as well,
Why memorize port and starboard?
Why indeed?
That's a bit extreme. The sailors that I've met in NE were.pretty knowledgable.
That hasn't been my experience
This is also available to consumers
Interesting
I'll be looking for better integration of satelite image on chartware.
That already exists in several forms Tom
Which cruising area is that?...
The Western Caribbean, Brian
