every season i get at least one call asking what my course is as I am way, way off shore. "Going to Portugal, Doug?" was one of the more humorous ones, when going down the eastern seaboard. Going to Maine is a far, far voyage. Accuracy, is not at all a concern for me. I want to be at least an hour sailing time off-shore ( my own made up rule, that it will take me an hour to dope out whats wrong, if something goes wrong), at least .25 nm from a major way-point ( so other boats heading for the same spot in fog or because of autopilot will not crash into me) and generally want to stay out of trouble. My rules have not prevented me from hitting a bridge or wiping out a stanchion or two, so don't go by me. Jon, you have a long memory. I have most charts and marked up and dog earned I they, but I rely on my chartplotter and haven't taken out the charts for at least two seasons from the stupid plastic case Maptech sells to idiots like me.
