To items shown on the chart, you could use the chartplotter facility. But to a nearby set of moving lights at night or a competitor (for example), you need some sort of reference. That is about all I use my binnacle compass for, and I made sure it was installed in a way to make this easy. Many installations these days you have no site line across the compass.
Now, once your electronic charts are gone via the lightening strike, there is no need for a compass. With no idea which way to go, no reason to select any particular course over another? I'd just head off on a nice broad reach....
