For clarity, solar panels work fine without any controller at all

Our 480W of solar after the lightning strike were how we kept our remaining starting batteries pressed into house service charged. You simply connect the panels directly to the batteries and disconnect them when the voltage climbs above 14.8V (for our batts). Solar panels themselves are pretty immune to lightning problems, if only for the fact they mostly sit inside the cone of protection of a strike.
