My navigations skills without tools (other than charts) are pretty well honed and I can read what nature provides pretty well. Even in fog one can navigate based on a known wind and current direction just by looking at wind waves. Listening to bell buoys has rescued me a few times over an uncalibrated compass in those conditions.
