What you're doing makes good sense. After we anchor I write down the clearest compass heading out of the anchorage. We also have the track on our helm chartplotter to follow back out. Always good to have the direction out written down before going to sleep. What's good about writing it down is when you do you're awake and clear headed. If you're woken up at 3 with rain, wind and no moon you're likely to become disoriented. A compass heading is the first thing that makes sense.
