() I couldn't understand why he could even ask himself that question. Hell, I've got a compass in my car. Not having one at the helm of the boat would be irresponsible. What happens if you get a lightening strike and every piece of electronics turn to toast?
Not including the safety factor is the traditional factor. A steering compass has been on boats that go out of sight of land ever since they were invented in 206BC.
