Why is anchoring different for a "coastal" sailor than for a blue water cruiser? Other than sea anchors, isn't it all the same thing? Anchors are used near shore.
Tom, I respect your experience and opinions. But anchoring's not all about technique and situational judgment. Equipment plays a major role, just as better tools do make a difference in the results (and effort to achieve them) even to the most accomplished and experienced craftsman. As for the expense: It's like insurance. What's the cost of going aground? When a severe thunderstorm comes up in the middle of the night and the lee shore is rocky there's no such thing as too much anchor or too much advantage. I don't sleep well in that situation no matter what's holding my boat.
