How are you calculating burn rate?

I do it by measuring amount needed to replenish the tank between fill-ups, and don't have confidence in accuracy because of the varying uses between fills and varying shut-off points to avoid vent spillage. I use one of those whistles in the vent line to tell me when to stop. Is there a better way?
