I have a friend with a 40' tri, he once couldn't turn it into the wind under power.

The saildrive, while enough power to go 7=8 knots, didn't have the power to round the boat up into about 25 knots of breeze This situation took place in the harbor, and he was quickly running out of harbor. He had to back it out. He later found lowering the centerboard helped but the boat was simply under powered. More engine would have given him the power to bring the bow into the wind. That reserve power can be a safety factor in a situation like that.
