If the boss argues, point out that the company is saving lots of overhead, and has the luxury of letting you go anytime, with no cost of notice etc.
In practice, such gigs usually last a lot longer than first expected.
I have been living that way for 40 years.

- Not much. Lots seem really cheap, some waterfront available to build. Built waterfront not so cheap but.....
- There's no substitute for going there

- Indeed San Diego IS a wonderful area...
