1.5 inch round made from 316 SS has a bending yield of about 11,500 in-lbs. My boat is a monohull, a little bigger and a little higher displacement. Its carbon rudder post has a calculated yield (in the weak direction) of about 912,000 in-lbs. A little over 78 times as strong. And I don't refer to it as "massive", but I do think it is "adequate". One could argue that the two smaller rudders on the lighter cat could see only 1/2 or even 1/4 of the stress. That makes them off only by a factor of 20.
The pictures of the steering gear on the Alpha look like a bad joke. Secured with a set screw (missing on one side). What does this suggest about the rest of the construction? I suppose there are some who would charitably assume that this was the one place where corners were cut on the boat. If you are one of those I can get you a deal on a major New York bridge.
