To recreate their predicament, you would need to turn the rudder hard over..

() then try to steer by other means. I have no doubt that makes it harder. But I also have little doubt that I could have found a way to lose that rudder. Heck it's only 1.5" "solid tube". Just bend it back and forth till it breaks off like you do with a paperclip.
