Endless discussions of judgement and Seamanship aside, I was more than a little annoyed at the owners attititude toward rescue that Charlie Doane describes.
- First he tells the USCG that he wants a "westbound" ship diverted for his rescue.
- Then when another eastbound ship diverts he waves it off because he doesn't want to go the ship's next port.
- His actions then require the SAR operation to use a helo, and because of the distance, a refueling from a diverted Destroyer (in those seas, a not-fun operation for either the helo or the DD's flight deck crew).
- When the owner is rescued by a swimmer who is essentially risking his life each time he goes in the water, he insists on carrying a large cooler up and onto the helo with him. Amazing that the swimmer let him get away with this.
- to put the icing on the cake, Doane complains about the "disgusting looking" sandwiches that the refueling DD provide on the return trip.
I' ve always had a lot of respect for Charlie Doane as a fellow Alberg 35 sailor and a generally sensible man. Shame on him for this one.
