Do we not know whether they were bent, we don't know when it actually happened! The assumption was that the big wave hit made the difference but we don't know that all the damage occurred then or from the wave. It could have just been the final straw in an already compromised system. There's lots of 'stuff' out there that can mess things up. How about a crab pot/ fishing buoy line for instance?
