Plain to see -that the reef- is plain to see. Wouldn't be the first boat to snag a reef while maintaining speed while closely skirting a hazard, that's a risk of racing. This grounding is the same old story, paper/pixels-human error.
The new factor I would worry is speed means sharper-faster navigation is in order.
I'm surprised how gently the boat slowed as it chewed it's way into the reef. Lightly built may mean sacrificial? I would have thought bodies moving at near 20 knots would have been flying. Lucky sailors!
'Zooming problems' should be ancient history for these guys(tech savvy) with high stakes. It's so easy to run different screens at different levels(I do that on my simple boat). That coupled with AIS, radar, sophisticated new sonar, and stuff I'm not even aware of,...alas,you still can't walk down the street without looking.
Correction; these guys are running down the street!
